Good Afternoon HSCSD #1 Patrons,
I am writing today to provide an update regarding the current school closure, and some developments, and decisions that have been made. The District very much appreciates all that everyone is doing to protect Hot Springs County residents and families. The District has conferred with our county health official, and it is imperative that we maintain social distancing guidelines. These restrictions will most likely alter many of our annual traditions, and I feel for all students, especially our seniors.
Alternate Graduation Plans: Principal Daniels has asked the senior class to vote on three alternative graduation plans, much in the same way that speakers, class moto, and class flowers are chosen. The students have elected to do a car parade and pick up diplomas at the Bobcat in front of the high school, and each senior will receive more detailed plans from Principal Daniels. At this time we will maintain the original date of May 17th. We will explore ways to have this streamed so that family members may watch digitally. The District is grateful for the many alternative suggestions. It is difficult to not have our traditional graduation, and it is also challenging to provide a plan that meets every 2020 graduates’ post graduation plans. If there is a change in restrictions between now and graduation, the District will consider more traditional options, but this plan will be in place if there are no changes to our restrictions.
Prom: Prom will be canceled and not rescheduled for the remainder of the school year. If restrictions are lifted by health and state officials Principal Daniels and her team will consider scheduling a July prom if student interest warrants an event.
Senior Night Graduation Party: It is my understanding our senior parent committee in charge of the graduation night celebration has cancelled those plans and will be giving each senior a cash gift. I appreciate this committee coming up with an alternate plan.
Spring Sports: The Wyoming High School Activities Association Board has canceled the spring sports season for the 2020 school year.
Building Use: After conferring with our county health official, buildings will be completely closed for use by the public or students until further notice that restrictions have been lifted.
I very much understand that these are difficult updates to hear. As the parent of a senior, I know how much our students value these activities, traditions, and rights of passage. But I have been so impressed with not only our seniors, but all the grit and determination of all of our students and community. We will update you further if there are any changes; in the meantime, we appreciate all that everyone in our District/Community is doing to move us forward in as positive a manner as possible.
